THEORIES OF AGING THAT GOVERN OUR LONGEVITY CLINIC

The Neuroendocrine Theory

The neuroendocrine system is a complex network of chemicals that control the release of hormones and other vital elements within the body. During our younger years, our hormones work in concert to regulate many bodily functions. Hormones are essential for the repair and regulation of our tissues and organs. When there is a declination in the levels of each hormone, the body's ability to repair and regulate itself becomes impaired. The feedback between hormones and the various glands is under the master control of both nerves and messengers from the brain. Different organs release various hormones, all under the governance of the hypothalamus. Hormones transmit information from one location in the body to another. These chemicals are transported in the blood and activate biochemical processes in the various target cells, thereby supporting every major bodily function and contributing to cellular metabolism, growth, repair, and rejuvenation. Today, age-related declination in hormones is recognized by many in the medical community as a leading contributing factor in the biological process of aging. It has been theorized that as our hormones fall, we age and not vice versa!

The Free-Radical Theory

Free radical is a term used to describe any molecule that differs from conventional molecules in that it possesses a free electron, a property that makes it react with other molecules in highly volatile and destructive ways. These particles attack the cell membranes creating metabolic waste products. They disturb DNA and RNA synthesis, interfere with synthesis of protein (thus lowering our energy levels and preventing our bodies from building muscle mass), and destroy cellular enzymes which are needed for vital chemical processes.

Free radicals also attack collagen and elastin which are responsible for keeping our skin smooth, flexible, and elastic. An example of this can be seen where folds of skin and deep-cut wrinkles occur in the face. Another way of looking at free-radical damage is to think of it as oxidation, the process of adding oxygen to a substance. An example of oxidation is the rust that occurs on metals. Hence, in a sense, our aging process is analogous to the rusting away of a once intact piece of metal.
